Chapter 4
The spring break started at school, signaling that April was well under way. Winter had loosened its grip on Salt Marsh Shores, and pussywillows and jonquils heralded the approach of kinder temperatures. Rob suggested to Tanner that they take a trip to Las Vegas.
“I’m not much of a gambler,” Tanner replied dubiously. “I know,” chortled Rob. “You won’t even take chances in real life. If you came out of the closet, things would be so much better and easier for you, but you won’t take that risk.”
“That’s gambling with something more than just money. That’s gambling with my comfort, my career, the quality of my life!” Tanner argued.
“Ah, but think of how much there is to win!”
Tanner stiffened, feeling his jaw jut out as he straightened up to face Rob contentiously. Then abruptly he felt himself sag. “I know. I wish I could do it,” he replied.
“Think about it. Just think about how nice it would be if you were out, if you could stop pretending and hiding. And if we could live together full-time.” Rob played his trump card.
“I knooooow!” Tanner groaned. “But I can’t. I can’t take that risk.”
“Think about how nice it would be,” Rob repeated. Then, apparently realizing he had pushed the subject far enough for this time, he returned to the subject of Las Vegas. “Meanwhile, are you ready to gamble on Las Vegas being fun? You don’t have to visit the casinos at all. Go for the shows. Go for the shopping. Go for the glitz and glamour. Go so you can say you’ve been to Vegas. Everyone should go once!”
“Why?” Tanner asked, realizing he sounded stubborn. “I don’t enjoy shopping or glitz and glamour. I’m sure I’d enjoy the shows, but I don’t have to go to Vegas for night club shows.”
“Don’t be a wet blanket. If none of those reasons talks to you, go to please me. Go because I want to go, and I’d much rather go with you than go alone. It’s spring break for you, and I’m owed vacation time. Let’s go to Vegas. And besides, in Vegas you don’t have to be uptight about holding my hand or other displays of affection. Nobody knows us. You know what they say—‘What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.’ We can be ourselves. Doesn’t that sound appealing?”
It did, although Tanner thought to himself that they could also go to New York, Miami, or L.A. and be themselves—and he’d probably have a much better time. But not wanting to be a wet blanket, he kept those thoughts to himself and simply said, “Yes, it does.”
“Then let’s book tickets. It’s kinda last-minute for us to get cheap airfare, but let me see what I can accomplish. I’ll work on the flights first and then on the hotel.”
“Okay, thanks,” said Tanner, who didn’t relish the prospect of trying to wrangle the least expensive tickets himself.
It was a Monday evening, they were at Tanner’s house, and Rob got on Tanner’s computer to try to book the tickets.
